He has been dubbed the father of non-conformist living; the guru of Afrikaans rock music and in November, Koos Kombuis will be rocking it with fans at Windmill’s Diamond Lils.
With his ever popular hits such as “Lisa se klavier” which has been covered by various artists, including the Parlotones and Laurika Rauch, Kombuis promises to deliver nothing less than lyrical genius transformed into a super one-man rock show.
Citing ex-Beatles George Harrison, John Lennon, Bob Dylan and Niel young as his strong musical influences, Kombuis toured campuses across the country in the 80s to “liberate Afrikaans from the shackles of its past”. Kombuis formed part of a group of musicians called VoĆ«lvry (Free as a bird) who strongly discouraged apartheid. This was, in a way, his claim to fame and earned him “icon status” with many South Africans and Afrikaans music lovers.
He is unapologetic and listening to his self-made hits from his albums Elke boemelaar se droom, Niemandsland and Beyond and Blameer dit op apartheid to mention but a few, is guaranteed to get audiences thinking deeply whilst enjoying raw, bold Afrikaans music from one of South Africa’s best lyricists.
“We are excited to be hosting such a big name in the Afrikaans and the South African music industry,” said Yasheen Sookdeon, General Manager of Windmill.
As he appears on stage, most likely with a bandana which has become his signature look, Kombuis will draw fans in as he displays not only his acoustic ability, but also his unique, one-of-a-kind vocals.
Don’t miss this show at Windmill’s Diamond Lils at 21h00 on 5 November. Tickets cost R 80 per person and are available at the Windmill cash desk. Unfortunately no under 18’s are allowed.
